In honor of Halloween, I thought I’d review the book Zombie Economics, by Lisa Desjardins and Rick Emerson. It was recently published, and takes a look at, “How to slay your bills, decapitate debt and fight the apocalypse of financial doom.” Not only does Zombie Economics offer practical, realistic advice on getting your finances back in order, but it also includes a great zombie story as you move through the pages.
The book starts out with the assertion that no one is going to save you from your financial apocalypse; only you can do that. Then, the book moves through the basics of building a firm financial foundation. Financial bloggers have heard all this advice before:
- Know your income
- Get a realistic look at your spending (and reduce it)
- Get out of debt
- Save money
- Watch out for scams
- Declare bankruptcy only if you have to
But it’s important advice. And it’s clear (as J.D. Roth recently pointed out in Forbes) that there are plenty of people who still need to hear it — since there are still plenty of people struggling on verge of complete financial disaster. Zombie Economics makes the whole journey entertaining. In between scenes of fighting off the undead, some real, practical advice is offered. And this isn’t your “find a way to make money doing what you love” brand of advice. Dejardins and Emerson are all about the tough love, reminding you that you need to improve your health habits to avoid costly medical problems, and telling you to keep your job for as long as you can — even if you hate it. (You can quit your job when you are financially stable.)
Throughout the book, there are helpful worksheets designed to aid you in creating a plan that can help you get your finances in order, and improve your situation. The worksheets help you assess your current situation, and then create a plan to bring your finances back to the land of the living.
Zombie Economics is a stripped down look at what you should do to help your finances survive. Yes, we all want to build wealth, and many of us want to quit our jobs and work from home. However, before we can do that, it’s important to build a solid financial base. Zombie Economics can show you how to do this, while entertaining you all the way.
